Data
A study into three unique variables that best defines the comfort of the toilet. How often do we rate our own bathrooms? Or have you ever wondered how unconventional your toilet is?
Afiq ultimately chose these three pointers as it best represents and describes the criterias of a comfortable toilet.
Introduction
In this project, Afiq studies and observes the toilet in his home for 24 hours. He focuses on the master bathroom as it is the one most frequently used by the people in his home. He believes that this would be an interesting study due to the busy schedule of his own family.
Data Visualisation
In this project, Afiq has opted for the bar graph as it best visualises the comparisons between three different variables of data. The bar graph while simple to the eyes, works effectively in communicating comparisons in data and highlighting key messages and insights from the data.
Afiq initially started with sketches on p5.js but ultimately moved onto illustrating his data visualisation on Adobe Illustrator. He believes that the graph done p5.js does not translate and represent the data aesthetically well! Hence he worked on a set of illustrations of a typical bathroom which was translated into a bar graph.
Afiq illustrated the toilet pipes as the inidicating legend of the bar graph and the water level in the pipes as the unit level of measurement in the graph itself.
Findings
The bathroom can easily reflect and describe the life of the people using it. Based on the data gathered by Afiq, he realises that the toilet gets more smellier and 'dirty' in the wee hours of the morning. The drainage hole gets infested by small flies. This naturally happens from a day to day basis and he has to constantly clean it. Afiq realises that this happens due to the lack of bathroom activity during that period and these little pests would come in.
Furthermore, Afiq observes that even when the toilet is clean enough, an unpleasant odor is still present, most particularly in the early morning and the late afternoons. He then realises that this is mainly contributed to the lack of bathroom activity during these periods. In addition, Afiq believes that the bathroom he shares with his family is constantly deemed clean due to the constant use of the bathroom - be it taking ablution for prayers 5 times a day!
Insights
Afiq realises that the toilet is almost constantly wet. He finds that this could be partly that he and his family are practicing Muslims who uses the toilet to take their timely ablution for prayers and self cleaning. He understands that a dry toilet will never be inevitable as the toilet is the most important part of the Muslim lifestyle where they have to make sure that they are clean before performing prayers or even before leaving the house.
Furthermore, Afiq observes that even when the toilet is clean enough, an unpleasant odor is still present, most particularly in the early morning and the late afternoons. He then realises that this is mainly contributed to the lack of bathroom activity during these periods. Afiq believes that the toilet is always clean as his mother will always spray on toilet cleaning solutions all around in between periods where there is a lack in bathroom activity!
Conclusion
What is mainly defined as a clean and comfortable toilet may be different for each household. From this data, Afiq is able to realise that the data is able to tell the way of life of his own family. Based on the statistics of the wet floor, Afiq believes that the data tells that the toilet is constantly used by the home owners and that the toilet is the main utility and way of life in the household.
